Top OPT Job Opportunities in the USA for International Students

What is OPT? Its types and benefits

Temporary work that is closely relevant to an F-1 student's major of study is known as optional practical training (OPT). Before or after finishing their academic studies, eligible students may apply for and receive up to 12 months of OPT jobs in USA authorization (pre-completion or post-completion). All pre-completion OPT periods, however, will be subtracted from the post-completion OPT time that is available.

Types of OPT in the United States

You will get the benefit of OPT jobs for international students USA, only in your major subject. At the same time, you should also have an F1 visa. There are two types of optional practical training, let us look at them:

Pre-completion OPT

Once you have completed one full academic year of eligible full-time enrolment at a conservatory, university or college, that has been approved by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) to accept F-1 students, you may apply to take part in pre-completion OPT. You can meet the "one full academic year" criterion even if you held another non-immigrant status during that time; you are not required to have held F-1 status for the whole school year.

You may work 20 hours or less per week during the school year if you are permitted to take part in pre-completion OPT. During the time off from school, you might work full-time.

Post-completion OPT

Following your graduation, you can apply to take part in post-completion OPT. You must work either full-time or part-time (at least 20 hours per week) if you are eligible for post-completion OPT. Here again the employment is in the field of your study during graduation.

What impact this system has for you as a student. Let us take a look at this factor:

The total amount of full-time OPT that is still available would be lowered by six months, or 50% of the previously approved year at the same educational level, if you have already obtained a year of part-time (20 hours per week) pre-completion OPT. You would only be eligible for the remaining six months of full-time OPT job authorization in this case.

The total amount of full-time optional practical training that is still available would be lowered by one year, or 100% of the previously approved year at the same educational level, if you have already completed one year of full-time (40 hours per week) pre-completion OPT. You would not be eligible for any post-completion OPT employment authorization period in this case.

Once you understand what OPT jobs in USA mean, you then need to understand

Another type of OPT jobs search that you can conduct is when you have graduated in any of the STEM subjects. You can request for a 24-month extension of a post-completion OPT employment. Let us take a look at this:

Do you work for an employer who is enrolled in and uses E-Verify? Did you get a first grant of post-completion OPT employment authorization based on your STEM degree? Are you an F-1 student with a STEM degree listed on the STEM Designated Degree Program List?

In these situations you will be eligible to apply for the special extension for STEM subject students and your OPT jobs search should be done accordingly.

Now let us take a look at how to apply for OPT, but before that we need to reiterate that your best bet for finding the ideal OPT jobs in New York or other parts of the USA is to check a specialized OPT and CPT jobs portal like OPTnation. The benefit of this portal is that it specializes in OPT and CPT job placements and reduces the effort in the process.

·         Ask your academic institution's designated school official (DSO) to suggest the OPT. By approving your Form I-20, Certification of Eligibility for Nonimmigrant Student Status, and entering the necessary information in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), your DSO will make the recommendation.

·         As stated in the form instructions, correctly submit Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization, to USCIS together with the necessary payment and supporting paperwork.

The best benefit of OPT system for F1 students is that it opens up the chances of getting full time employment in the same company that has hired them through OPT. This allows them to file for an H1B visa and enjoy the benefits of working in an upswing market.
